乔伊(1911～1977)原籍奥地利，从小喜爱动物1937年，这位富家少妇去肯尼亚度假，竟迷上了肯尼亚的热带森林和珍禽异兽。从此她就留在肯尼亚，与丈夫离了婚，嫁给了当地的禁猎监督官——一个出生于印度的英国人乔治·埃丹森(1906～1989)。两人志趣相投，把一生献给了森林动物。有一次，乔治遭到一头母狮的袭击，被迫开枪自卫。后来发现，被击毙的母狮遗留下3头刚出生的幼崽。于是他们把其中较强壮的两只送给动物园，最弱小的一只留养在家中，取名“爱尔莎”，和它同吃、同睡、同出游。几年以后，爱尔莎长大了，埃丹森夫妇就把它放归山林。
