在为索尼哥伦比亚完成Facebook创始人故事片《社交网站》（The Social Network）之后，大卫·芬奇（David Fincher）又将继续和他们合作，拍摄一部讲述美国国际象棋大师鲍勃·费舍（Bobby Fischer）生平的传记片《弃卒》（Pawn Sacrifice）。　　鲍勃·费舍是美国国际象棋界的偶像级人物，他曾于1972年在冰岛首都雷克雅维克举行的国际象棋世界冠军挑战赛上，代表美国击败了前国际象棋世界冠军——苏联的鲍里斯·斯帕斯基（Boris Spassky）。　　《弃卒》剧本由斯蒂文·奈特（Steven Knight）创作，制片人盖尔·卡茨（Gail Katz）若干年前就开始为哥伦比亚公司筹划此片了，除他之外，传闻将主演该片的托比·马奎尔（Tobey Maguire）也将担任制片人。

故事创意来自影片男主角，喜剧演员尼克·科罗尔，讲述一个年轻、自恋的企业家（科罗尔饰），自己的公司在即将大展宏图的前夜忽然崩溃。生活陷入一团混乱的他，不得不离开曼哈顿，搬到郊区，与疏远多年的姐姐，她的丈夫——现实生活中的夫妻萝丝·拜恩与鲍比·坎纳瓦尔出演——以及自己3岁的外甥同住。在照顾小外甥的过程中，他开始发现生命的意义，以及作为一个成年人，如何重新开始。

Working with Detective Lynwood (Kevin O'Grady), Jennifer helps single out a disgruntled customer as the prime suspect, while she and her business partner, Danielle (Strange), sift through boxes from the auction. As her husband Jason (Bacic) worries about her safety, Jennifer starts to get over her head when there is a break-in at her store, and a run-in with Martin's angry wife.
