党的十一届三中全会后，年迈体衰的市委书记梁羽，向市委提出申请，准备退居第二线。可梁羽的妻子杨青蔚，却被市委人事变动的消息搞得心神不安，唯恐自己的丈夫职务变动后成为徒有其名的牌位，她为此四处活动，探听消息。梁羽早已对妻子插手公事的做法不满，曾特意定了"约法三章"，借此限制她的越轨行为。可是近来，他发现杨青蔚仍假借自己的名义干预公事，搞不正之风；还耳闻目睹小女儿塞北依赖他的特权，贪图享受，不求上进。为改变妻子、女儿的特权思想，梁羽决定开个家庭会议，帮助教育她们，并宣布自己的离休决定。不料，刚露风声，马上遭到妻子的强烈反对，她又哭又闹，梁羽百般劝解无效，家庭会议不欢而散。杨青蔚为阻止丈夫离休，连夜来到市委第一书记肖朋家，无理要求市委不接受梁羽的离休报告。肖朋佯装厉色，据理相讥，使杨青蔚败兴而归。梁羽为摆脱妻子的纠缠，与长女燕北悄悄地离开家，到水利工地视察、采访。他一边视察水电站的建设情况，一边对市委书记的接班人、电站总指挥迟新方传授经验，做好让贤准备。梁羽突然离家，急坏了杨青蔚，她表面上不动声色，实际上继续奔波。当活动连连受挫后，杨青蔚又生一计，打电报请来了母亲和哥哥，企图借他们一臂之力，扭转败局。梁羽的儿子梁晋和燕北积极支持父亲离休让贤，他们背着母亲偷偷地把外婆和舅舅接到肖朋家。梁羽和肖朋向老人讲真情，杨母坚决支持女婿梁羽。伴随家庭的风波，社会也向梁羽施加种种压力。棉纺厂厂长李景德认为梁羽已经离休，无利可图，便强迫儿子允公与燕北解除婚约。杨青蔚为阻止丈夫离休，扬言要离开他。年迈体衰的梁羽，不堪过分刺激，心脏病突然发作。杨青蔚看到丈夫心脏病复发，开始悔恨自己的行为。在众亲朋的帮助和教育下，她认识了错误，全家人愉快地支持梁羽光荣离休。

Beauty contest winner Patricia Knight's one bid for screen stardom was Columbia's Shockproof. Knight plays Jenny Wright, a convicted murderess paroled in the care of probation officer Griff Marat (Cornel Wilde). What begins as an aloof professional relationship eventually blossoms into romance. The fly in the ointment is shady Harry Wesson (John Baragrey), the gambler who inveigled Jenny into committing murder. The girl is torn between creature comforts offered her by Wesson and the promise of a clean life offered by Griff. Jefty, owner of a roadhouse in a backwoods town, hires sultry, tough-talking torch singer Lily Stevens against the advice of his manager Pete Morgan. Jefty is smitten with Lily, who in turn exerts her charms on the more resistant Pete.
